Irena Massarella
My interests are broad and eclectic. I am drawn to sketching sights of everyday life in pen & watercolour and strive to capture the energy of the scene. Flowers and botanical scenes feature in a lot of my watercolour work and I enjoy the challenge of building up images with layers of watercolour glazes. Architectural vistas especially ruins are a great treat to paint in watercolour, getting lost for hours in layers of detail. And lastly, I love the drama and emotion of big skies; landscapes; capturing light and I am happiest painting outside in oil or pen & wash.
I am an exhibiting member of both the Dedham Art Society and Colchester Art Society. Since 2019 I have started to sell a few paintings locally and in Scotland. I donate a percentage of profits to cancer research annually.
I was diagnosed with cancer in 2009 and in 2018, in both cases treatment and recovery was over a period of 12 months. With time on my hands I turned to painting which became a way of working through illness and nurturing recovery. Painting is a hobby that still nourishes my wellbeing and mental health and I now create art to improve my practise and increase my donations to cancer research.
”…for me painting is about the pleasure of living and connecting; transforming and creation; being grateful and sensitive to what’s around me and enjoying the contentment and harmony of trying to capture emotion and subjects that inspire me.”
